Haskofah for the most part is based on halachah. Take for example the state of Israel. Ocording to Rav Chaim ozer to fight against the state is a violation of the shvuah not to revolt against a host nation. Yet we look at it as a matter of hashkofos.
I do understand that there are some hashkofos that are not based on halachah and some halachah that can't be changed due to hashkofos. Anyone who says you have to have a black hat and any other color one is no good, has no basis in halachah and can be skipped. So too anyone who says the mishkav zochor today or any day is ok is also wrong. But there is a lot of gray and we all pick and choose our hashkofos, even when it is based on halachahAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626162062588121300.post-54025193688535673602014-01-28T19:52:06.809-08:002014-01-28T19:52:06.809-08:00I think the previous commenter was asking that sin...I think the previous commenter was asking that since I can shoose my hashkafa, why cannot Rabbi Weiss choose his hashkafa as well?

My essay was not about rabbi Weiss' Hashkafa, but about his innovations in Halacha. That is a different matter. Once cannot make huge unprecedented changes in Halacha without the support of a single significant posek that go against our Mesorah of thousands of years. That is where he parts company with the rest of the Orthodox world.YLOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13689893295605516727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626162062588121300.post-27800534605993403352014-01-27T09:24:21.693-08:002014-01-27T09:24:21.693-08:00Where does hashkofa end and halachah begin? If I would ask Rav Chaim Kanievsky if I could go to college in the USA he would say it is assur, if i would ask the satmur rebbe if I can say the mi shbarach for the medinah he would say it is assur. If I would ask Rav Kook if one can through rocks at a chiel he would say it is assur.

I pick and choose which one to follow as do you. If i follow my rabaim who are admittedly of lesser stature then any of those mentioned, is that ok?

If i get to choose my hashkofah which has a baisis in halachah why can Rabbi Wiess choose his hashkofah as well? But it is he who caused much of the problem originally, and it is certainly he who has caused the terrible damage to the Rabbanut through his PR discreditation campaign.YLOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13689893295605516727noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626162062588121300.post-31282901983589583572014-01-23T13:35:42.180-08:002014-01-23T13:35:42.180-08:00Dear Rabbi Oppenheimer,

Avi Weiss, while in fact recently several RCA members found themselves in the same predicament vis-a-vis their eidut. The letter disseminated by the RCA said just that. So while it is true that R. Weiss was the big headliner here (to be expected), it was not just about him. Given this fact on the ground, in my opinion your entire thesis, argument and conclusion are simply non-starters.

Rabbi Avram H.
